After injury, the best thing you can do is to take it easy. You may feel like you want to be up and running around as soon as possible, but if your body isn’t ready for such an activity, then all of your hard work could go to waste. The first thing you should do after an injury is to take a look at your surroundings. Are you in the middle of nowhere? Do you have access to fresh water and shelter, or will you need to create some if not all of these things for yourself?
If possible, always remember that first aid is important. If it’s within reach, treat any wounds with whatever supplies are available until you can get more advanced medical attention. You don’t want infection setting into even minor injuries which could lead to further complications down the road. Also keep hydrated as much as possible- drink plenty of fluids but avoid caffeinated beverages because they dehydrate your body rather than rehydrating it!
It goes without saying that bed rest is vital during recovery from most serious injuries. You don’t want to risk making the situation worse by overstressing even slightly damaged tissues and muscles when they’re already trying to heal themselves!
If possible, ice your injuries for ten minutes at a time every hour or two during the first few days after an injury. Don’t apply ice directly- wrap it in something like a washcloth before applying so you don’t damage the skin with frostbite (which can make all of this recovery stuff much more difficult).
Also keep in mind that bone breaks are not always visible externally. If there’s any serious pain, swelling, redness, numbness, or bruising around multiple joints then you should seek medical care ASAP because these could indicate fractures which may need surgery depending on how severe it is.
